Green Flag environmental achievement award

In an effort to reduce air pollution caused by ship traffic, the Californian port of Long Beach introduced a Green Flag scheme: vessels approaching the port at a speed of only 12 knots or less over the final 20 sea miles are given a discount on harbour dues.

The scheme saves the seaport several hundred tons of polluting particles annually – an important measure against the increasing incidence of asthma among the children and adults living around the edge of the port area. In 2008 / 2010 / 2011, Hamburg Süd was among the Green Flag Top 14 shipping companies which called at Long Beach the most frequently and were the most reliable at complying with the speed limit.
