Please tell us a little about yourself.
My name is Thies Hansen, I’m 21 years old, and have been a dual student at Hamburg Süd since August 1, 2016.
Why did you opt for the dual course of study at Hamburg Süd?
The key experience was my trip through Argentina and Brazil. The beautiful red Hamburg Süd containers caught my attention there several times and made me curios. When I subsequently read up on Hamburg Süd and became aware of the varied areas of activity, the international environment and scale, it became clear to me that I wanted to complete my dual course of study there.
Were your expectations met?
My expectations have definitely been met so far. The various specialist departments I spent time in were each very different and all exciting. What I find interesting is that after each stint in a specialist department, your eye for the “big picture” of shipping is expanded and a more intensive understanding of the interconnections within the company developed.
Do you like your course? And can you put what you learn into practice?
The dual study scheme is a lot of fun, though it’s also demanding and asks a lot of you. The double burden of studying and doing the practical phases in the company is time-consuming – but it’s worth it! Generally, it gives me a great deal of pleasure to see the theory learned applied directly or indirectly in practice and to be able to link them independently.
Do you have any tips for interested students who might still be uncertain?
If you’re interested in an international work environment, are attracted by the idea of gaining insight into global economic processes, and spurred on by challenging tasks, then you’re in good hands at Hamburg Süd.
