Sustainability – “Gold” for Hamburg Süd
Sustainability is an indispensable component of Hamburg Süd’s corporate philosophy. That’s why we have independent experts regularly access our sustainability efforts. Just recently, the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) awarded Hamburg Süd an above-average grade, while EcoVadis bestowed its highest-possible “Gold” status rating on us for the second time.

Combating climate change continues to be very high on the list of global priorities. Hamburg Süd is also actively engaged in efforts to reduce the CO2 emissions within its fleet. For example, it has succeeded in reducing its emissions by over 35 percent per TEU/km compared to the base year 2009. Each year, Hamburg Süd submits data on its CO2 emissions to the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP). This non-profit organization collects and publishes the environmental data of companies and cities worldwide. Participation is voluntary, and Hamburg Süd is one of only a few shipping companies that has been disclosing these figures for several years. For 2017, Hamburg Süd was once again given a good “B” grade, certifying that it is taking coordinated action on climate change issues. Thus, Hamburg Süd stands two whole grades above the average not only in the Water Transportation industry group, but also within the CDP’s Supply Chain program and in the group of companies from the DACH region.

Being committed to sustainability pays off in several ways

Hamburg Süd also received the top grade for its sustainability management from EcoVadis, which issues CSR ratings of suppliers for global supply chains. For the second time, its independent experts awarded Hamburg Süd its “Gold” status rating, the highest-possible recognition level. In fact, Hamburg Süd was even able to slightly improve within this top assessment. The EcoVadis rating is based on four categories that take into consideration the aspects of Environment, Fair Business Practices, Labor Practices & Human Rights, and Sustainable Procurement. We earned above-average marks in all of the categories within the Sea and Coastal Water Transportation industry sector. Hamburg Süd also did very well in the overall comparison, numbering among the top 2 percent of all companies rated by EcoVadis. “This is motivating feedback, and we are very pleased about it,” says Dr. Arnt Vespermann, CEO of Hamburg Süd. “What’s more, our engagement is paying off in several ways: for the environment and Hamburg Süd – but, above all, for our customers. They can count on us to meet very high standards, thereby contributing to sustainably shaping their entire supply chain.”
