Safety at work

The health and safety of our employees is of extreme importance. We base the safety management system we use for our shift work on the ISM Code. Practical exercises that meet the toughest standards in the world, ongoing training, and premium equipment ensure health and safety on board.

Supply chain

Hamburg Süd expects its suppliers to respect the prevailing laws and to provide good occupational health and safety protection to their employees. Our Supplier Code of Conduct (PDF, 15 KB) , which includes general working conditions such as working hours and wages, anchors this requirement in policy. Only shipyards certified in accordance with OHSAS 18001 for occupational health and safety management are permitted to build, repair, or maintain our ships.

Ship recycling

The ships of Hamburg Süd are recycled after their time at sea has run its course. Valuable commodities such as steel and non-ferrous metals are reclaimed, while materials dangerous to health or the environment are disposed of professionally. For this purpose, Hamburg Süd works with recycling shipyards certified in accordance with both ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001.

Training and personal development

Hamburg Süd offers ten apprenticeships and two work–study programs, providing young people with a multitude of options for starting their careers on land and at sea. Test results are the proof of our excellent conditions and the commitment of our apprentice instructors: Hamburg Süd apprentices regularly perform better than average.

Seasoned employees and long-term professionals can also continue to develop on a personal and a professional level at Hamburg Süd. In addition to shipping-specific training, we offer courses to develop soft skills, IT skills, and language skills. We also have a special development program for managers and young professionals to ensure that we have a strong team over the long run.

Equal opportunity

As a company with international operations, we view diversity as a strengthening and enriching factor. That’s why we do everything we can to offer our employees an appreciative work environment, free of discrimination. Our internal Code of Conduct sets down clear rules for how to conduct ourselves. The worker’s council, Equal Opportunity Officer, and Compliance organization are contact points for all anti-discrimination issues and will guarantee anonymity upon request. Hamburg Süd is also a member of the diversity charter ("Charta der Vielfalt"), a corporate initiative to promote a non-discriminatory work environment.

Social engagement

As a company that acts responsibly, we are engaged across the globe – for example by offering transportation capacity free of charge for technical respectively medical equipment. We also happily support the numerous projects our employees develop in different regions at their own initiative. The “Cap San Diego” in the Port of Hamburg holds a special place in our involvement. Thanks to our support, this former Hamburg Süd bulk freighter is now the largest seaworthy museum ship in the world.
