Charges assessed by a carrier against the merchant or consignee as compensation for holding carrier's equipment beyond a certain stated period of "free time" (i.e. in a terminal, calculation is from the discharge of a vessel until container is out the gate or from the time the container is in the yard until it is loaded to a vessel; in the case of an inland depot or rail ramp, calculation is from the date of arrival at the depot/ramp until gate out).
Inbound: Free Time commences on day of discharge if before 8:00 AM, the following day if after 8:00 AM.
Day of discharge is determined by the terminal operator.
Exception: Philadelphia, Baltimore and Seattle free time commences on day of vessel departure if before 8:00 am, the following day if after 8:00 am. Long Beach free time commences on day of discharge if before 3:00 am, the following day if after 3:00 am. Oakland free time commences on day of vessel departure if before 12:00 am, the following day if after 12:00 am.
Outbound: Free time to commence on the next working day after the loaded container is delivered by the shipper to the carrier designated terminal.
Free Time:
Time allowed for shippers or consignees/receivers to pick up/deliver and/or load/unload cargo before demurrage, detention and other charges accrue.
Working Day basis defined as any day a gate is open for container pickup Monday – Saturday.

a. Demurrage disputes for U.S. shipments can be raised by submitting a request to the following:

b. When registering a dispute, please include a copy (attachment) of the disputed invoice, the container number(s) and a detailed description of the dispute including the applicable service contract number if pertinent to the claim. For exports please include the booking number.
c. Disputes must be submitted to Hamburg Sud within 30 days of the invoice date. We will provide feedback on your dispute within 5 business days of receipt.
